WASHINGTON DC — President Donald J. Trump announced today the nomination of Representative Matt Gaetz, a Republican from Florida, as Attorney General of the United States. This choice marks a significant pivot in Trump’s transition team’s approach to reshaping the Justice Department and aligns with Trump’s long-standing call for substantial reforms at the DOJ.
“Few issues in America are more important than ending the partisan weaponization of our Justice System,” Trump said in a statement issued by the Trump-Vance transition team. “Matt will end Weaponized Government, protect our Borders, dismantle Criminal Organizations, and restore Americans’ badly-shattered Faith and Confidence in the Justice Department.”
Gaetz, a controversial figure known for his vocal criticism of the DOJ’s handling of issues ranging from Russia’s interference investigations to alleged government overreach, has made headlines through his role on the House Judiciary Committee. In that position, he has been an outspoken critic of what he terms “systemic corruption” within the DOJ, often railing against what he claims is a misuse of government power for partisan ends.
On Capitol Hill, Gaetz’s nomination is already stirring debate. Supporters of Gaetz argue that his appointment will help “restore the rule of law” by aggressively targeting perceived abuses within the DOJ. Critics, however, view his nomination as a continuation of Trump’s politicization of the department, which they say could further erode public trust.
“Under Matt’s leadership, all Americans will be proud of the Department of Justice once again,” Trump asserted, emphasizing Gaetz’s commitment to “Honesty, Integrity, and Transparency” in restoring the DOJ to its original mission of upholding crime-fighting, democracy, and constitutional principles.
The confirmation battle for Gaetz is expected to be intense.
